The Hermanus Whale Festival is the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa “putting the creatures of the deep on stage and under the spotlight alongside top performers and musicians from 20 September to 24 September”. During the festival, Hermanus hosts over 100 000 visitors overall, making it an exciting and busy time for this small fisherman's village. Viewers are privy to the amazing Southern Right whales and their breeding and calving habits, as well as enjoy music, arts, performances and foods from all around South Africa.
In previous years the festival included several other locations, making it that much more accessible to visitors. These locations host everything; from educational to entertaining and food based to wine tastings. When festival-goers tire of the marquees, there are the walks and view points that offer stunning views of the whales and the ocean.
Other attractions include the Two Oceans Wine, Food and Music Marquee, the Marine Endangered Species Expo Marquee, the Checkers Living Table and the numerous other events that take place during these four days. This family friendly and highly anticipated event gives everyone the opportunity to experience nature and the Overberg in one mass of colours, sounds, tastes and sights.
