An Accessible Hermanus

Cliff Path Hermanus Gearing Point Fernkloof Nature Reserve

Hermanus is known as THE Whale Watching Capital of the World so, naturally, we’ve made sure that you can get around in any way necessary to be able to see the whales and enjoy the area. We have also insured that we have several Wheelchair Friendly areas so that everyone can enjoy Hermanus without struggle. Bathrooms for disabled visitors can be found at the Market Square and Municipal Library whilst recreational facilities where the disabled can be accommodated are at the Village Craft Market, Fernkloof Nature Reserve, certain parts of the Cliff Paths, the Library and Grotto Beach.

OUR CLIFF PATH
Although it may sound like a perilous and daunting walk, the Cliff Path is actually a beautiful and meandering pathway surrounded by natural growth that wraps itself around our coastline. You’ll be able to experience the whales as well as the breath-taking views of Hermanus, all with the comfort of land beneath your feet.

GEARING POINT
It’s known as the lookout point of Old Harbour where mothers, wives and children would await their brothers, fathers and husbands coming back from fishing expeditions. Nowadays there are no more fishing boats docking in the small harbour but there are still plenty of watchers along the Point. This is both a perfect land-based whale watching location and a great place to look out over the ocean and enjoy the view and art on display (thanks to the Fynarts Outdoor Expo that goes on year-round).

FERNKLOOF NATURE RESERVE
Fernkloof Nature Reserve is always open and there are several designated areas for wheelchair bound tourists. These paths take you through a stunning array of fauna and flora and give you an uninterrupted view of the mountainous area. These paths have been lovingly maintained by the committee and several volunteers who have been with the Reserve and gardens since its conception.

HEMEL EN AARDE VALLEY
On the way towards Hermanus, along the R44, a quick left turn onto the R320 at the Hemel en Aarde Village will find you travelling along the stunningly picturesque Hemel en Aarde Valley, which is a beautiful route and a perfect way to experience a different side of the Overberg. Most of the wine farms along this winding route offer wheelchair friendly restaurants and facilities for you to enjoy.
